I live in a single-storey terrace house with my parents and my sister. It is a small house but as we are a small family it suits us nicely.
There is a small piece of land about the size of a bedroom in the front portion of the house. This is our garden where we have planted some flowers and other plants. This is also where many insects are found.
The most common insect found are ants. I have, on various occasions, seen many of them scurrying around in their daily task of searching for food. Often they form wavy lines where they move to and from their nest and the source of food. The worker ants are small while the soldier ants are much larger. I do not disturb them for these little red terrors give painful bites.
There are also various types of ants of different colours and sizes. Some even have wings. However they all have one thing in common. They seem to be busy all the time.
Another busy insect is the bee. I can see them sometimes among the flowers as they buzz around searching for nectar. Occasionally a huge black bumble-bee can be found busy at work too.
Among the dead leaves and grass are found beetles, lady-birds and other insects. I do not know the reason for them to be there but it must either be for food or for shelter.
Flies and other flying insects are found flitting around among the flowers. These flies are larger than the ones found in the house. The other insects I do not know the name of. Most are small and they come in various colours. Sometimes they are well camouflaged among the leaves and it is difficult to make them out.
Sometimes a grasshopper come to eat the leaves of the plants. It does not do much damage so I leave it alone. Also a preying mantis sometimes come to visit. Usually I see it by accident for it looks just like a leaf, except for its large eyes.
There are many other insects. Some live permanently in the garden, while some come to visit for a while. The visitors usually have wings. Whatever they are, it is indeed wondrous to know that so many living things can be found in just a small area of land such as my modest garden.
