"Man convicted for multiple murders'", 'Level of pollution increasing tenfold'', "War leaves people scarred", "Teenage hacker detained", "Study: Health of the world detiorates"
These screaming headlines grab our attention day by day as we continue with our daily routines. They all come down to one fact: the world is getting worse.
In this so-called 'civilised' world in which we live today, the various atrocities committed by man in all aspects make one wonder. Are we getting better or worse? We, the Homo sapiens, the only species in the animal kingdom with the ability to think, commit acts that no animal would.
The advancement of technology, especially in communication, modernizes the word to a degree our forefathers could not even begin to imagine. With the onslaught of globalisation, the deterioration of our values and the increase in social problems is inevitable. Or is it?
The rate of crimes committed is rising steadily; various social problems, for instance, gangsterism, corruption and so on seem to increase day by day. In this modern world of ours, society pressures us into achieving our maximum potential, as a result, stress and other psychological problems are also on the rise.
Man's longevity is increased by the advancement of medical knowledge and technology. However, we are not living as healthily as our ancestors because in the past, diseases like cancer and AIDS didn't even exist. However, they are wild spread now and no living person can escape being infected with varioussicknesses one way or another.
Environmental-wise, the world is undeniably getting worse. Holes in the ozone layer, logging of forests, extinction of species, pollution of water sources, damaging of fragile ecosystems —these environmentally harmful incidents are not rare. In fact, they occur very often and are harmful to man, directly or indirectly.
The bottom line is, the world is indeed getting worse. However, all is not lost. Awareness of our situation at every level of society would be the first step towards bettering our world. Man has resided on this planet for millennia and would surely want our future generations to enjoy what we have. Therefore, with the combined effort of every human being the world could indeed change for the better.
